Well, here he is folks! I realise the photos are not great (jungle background on a snow base), but I hope you can see him. I plan to enter him for Youngbloods this year, and he came joint third in pastor prime's two week "Best Painter in the World" competition.
Many thanks to my good friend Iain for letting me use his camera Anyway, about the mini... After many hours of drilling, I swapped his piddly little sword for a Kislev Halberd (thanks Mark, thanks also for help with the colour scheme). He is my first human figure, so many new techniques here. I kept with the original GW colour scheme, but faded it by adding lots of greys, to look bleached and worn by years of hard Northern weather. I added red tones to his face and skin to make him look ruddy in the cold, and there are no golds-all the metals are silver only I attempted some limited, subtle freehand and am quite pleased with how that came out. I kept the colour scheme as simple as possible, and the browns tonally similar: the leaves on the base (thanks Rune and Albert) have branches the same colour as the shaft of his halberd, the bow on his back, his boots and the beavers.
Yes. Beavers. I hope you like them, they are all sculpted. Castor is the Romance language version of beaver, a nice bit of history there The base is slate, with real soil and a lot of snow, along with a manky Chaos shield (Kislev are great enemies of Chaos). The blade of the halberd is a tribute to nano of Spanish Team.
I would like to thank some people who have helped along the way: Torstein, Mark, Rune, Albert, Fernando, Banshee, Margo, Hashmallum, mistamick, medved, everybody who has commented on my past minis, and all my friends on wonderful CMON, and all my friends IRL. And of course thanks to pastor for starting this competition, and good luck to all entrants! Thanks again to Iain, sorry to anyone I forgot
I hope you like him
Comments and critique welcomed!

nano 29-May-06 #180121 | | Rating: 8 Hi Bill, this mini is better than your ogre! It´s very nice that you have improved your level. Love the base and the colours used are perfect. If you want you can do some better entries for this year young blods category. I´m sure that you will win! |
AinuLainour 28-May-06 #180016 | | Rating: 10 Wow! You paint far beyond your age! This has inspired me to work harder on my GD Chicago entries, thanks, Bill! |
hashmallum 27-May-06 #179939 | | Rating: 8 Ok Bill , now this is very nice.
Two things are exceptionally :
1. Base
2. Face of the Lord - this is really impressive.
Now the things I have some doubt about
1. THE PHOTO - bill please try to get better pics
If you wish I can pm you and write what to do in order to get better pics
2. Nmm - read some articles about it - the refraction of light on metallics looks a tad different Also you can look at some photos on the internet to get a view of how it looks in real Also for the freehands - gereat job , but this time they aren't sharp enough , also I would add 1 further highlight to all the reds.
Oh and also I presume that you painted his greaves as the last thing - the highlights are a tad rough - I know that painting the final touvhes is really a pain , but try to get those also good next time
I love the furry hat
Hope to see more from you soon !
Great Work Bill! |
Wren 26-May-06 #179867 | | Rating: 8 Very nice! Solid colour scheme, wonderful face, and I love the beavers. Nice job on the snow, and the subtle freehand is well done and effective. The halberd blade is a weak area, also I think it would help to manipulate the plant a little more, it looks very much on a 2D plane right now. |
demonherald 26-May-06 #179853 | | Rating: 8 looking great Bill.. Painting beyond your years..sharpen up the contrast on the halberd blade..The beavers rock... |
M. A. CORSO 26-May-06 #179831 | | Rating: 10 a great job!!! |
Orb 26-May-06 #179823 | | Rating: 8 all age things considered, this is, in my opinion, worth more than the 6.5 its currently at. the figure is great. just get some pliers onto the etched leaves; look at nature, and stop it being so flat!! I reckon you've time for another b4 gamesday |
laurence 26-May-06 #179791 | | Rating: 8 That's seriously c00l! Your choice of colours, blending and style spell C00l with a capital 'C'. The snow on the base looks very real. Excellent! | |
