HI As this is my first article be easy on me if it aint worded well or set out well. A few people have commented on how good the base on my Death Cult Assassin mini looks and I thought Id show you.Theres nothing special or technical really and I found it real easy to do.So here goes. This is the mini and base in question.
  • The effect I was looking for was the Assassin stood in shallow flowing water. The next pic shows the supplies I used. You can put anything on the base you like eg. skulls, branches gold coins. The rocks and pebbles I used are railroad scenics, just use something that looks somewhere near the correct scale. My grey pebbles should really be tan shades btw.
  • 1.Clean base.
  • 2.Paint the top of the base snakebite leather or any other colour if you like.Place a thin layer of pva over the base then arrange the rocks, pebbles and foliage (flatten the foliage).Leave this to dry for 1 hour (ish).
  • 3.Apply pva to the base but not overtop of the rocks as you want these to stick out of the water.
  • 4.Leave to dry completely until it looks like this.
  • 5.Apply another layer of pva and let it dry completely,,this is the final layer.
  • 6.Once this is dry and totally clear its ready to paint on the water swirls. These were done with grey and white and should be around everything that sticks out of the water. The faster you want the flow to look the longer the lines from behind the objects should be.Also apply spots on the front of the objects to represent surf hitting the front.

Pic 4 looks more complete than the latter photo - overkill I think. Should have left it mate! Less is more sometimes - v. informative article though, especially 4 the beginner.

Not as good as the specfic water effects stuff, but nice and cheap!

PVA can also be mixed with citadel paints to give a tint to the water (Such as a scummy green or bright green toxic waste)

one of the best things i have used is woodland scenics water effects just for this... easy to use and can be use to detail waves etc

I like the idea. I've been using gloss gel medium. Maybe the waves would be more realistic if you ran the tip of a toothpick where you want the ripples as the glue is drying. Then depending on how fast you want the water to look, you would just have to pain the peaks of the ripples

The "paint" step seems to detract from the overall effect, but otherwise very nice

Painting some of the water movement marks on the second-to-last layer would help show turbulance in/under the water.

Simple, elegant and effective. Nice one!

Lordofthepit, If you have problems with the PVA not drying clear, you probably need to put it on thinner, and maybe do a few more layers... I find PVA dries milky if the layers are too thick.

    OrForAwesome17,check out step 6!!
LordofthePit,sorry it wasnt clear, guess it might be best to do a trial run of the pva,I use it a lot and it all dries clear, some can have a yellow tinge though.

Great article. I tried it myself after reading it... turns out my supposedly clear-setting PVA glue wasn't so clear-setting after all, well now I've got a good looking snow-base

The base on the first picture looks better than the still water in the last picture. you don't explain how you made the water look like it has movement as in the assassin base.

Modo, sjakkie, I treid to do the article bit by bit so it was just a mix up.Caelithar, the pva is on neat so its not runny.Painting the first layer will also work but I think it will be more suited to still water. As u can see u can barely make out the grass on the base.Another effect is if youre doing the water deeper u could add flotsam fish etc between layers,Im gona try that soon.

I like it , simple but effective , I'll have to give it a go . How did the PVA not run down the sides ? a steady hand no doubt . I wonder if painting the first layer will also add to the effect . Must try soon . Nice one

Could you try to explain what you did to create this very good looking base?
(What materials did you use, in what order did you do things, etc.)
That would make it a bit more "article"-like.
