Finally this is a backplate which shows how the light is reflected by a large curved surface. The darker section in the lower middle is of course the floor of the museum (me standing in the middle). However, all the upper lighted section is the reflection of the lighted ceiling. You can see how the layered plates of the skirt section seem to raise the reflection into a pyramid shape, due to the severe curve of the metal.
Sky-Earth NMM is being used to represent this and I though that those painters starting out on that track could use this as an example.
I intended this brief article to be of use as a resource for painters. I hope it's going to be of help.
I intend to add another article soon with pictures of the Japanese armour at the Royal Armouries.
Meanwhile a visit to the Royal Armouries is worthwhile and I would recommend that, if possbile, you go. There are now three, Leeds, Plymouth & London. |

Nice idea if you are planning to paint a mini in an indoor
diorama, but if not you should stick to looking at paintings of outdoor battles. Nice try, and I think Faethor was a little too harsh.

Sorry bro, but taking pictures INSIDE the museum is not too handy if u wanna use it for NMM-light sources are crappy and not from upside-simply taken, this is not too useful-better is taking piscures on some historical actions outside-this could be useful...sorry for critics but very similar pictures emerget on some czech forums about NMM and heve been strongly critised because of all aforementioned...

The 1/6 scale one looks a lot like a late 14th C. armour fron Schloss Churburg in Italy. The top helmet on page 2 is a Maximilian style armet with a bellows visor, it's probably German and looks to me like it's from about 1520. The next one's a burgonet from later in the 1500's. The breastplate on page 3 could be from the first half of the 1500's. It has that globose shape from that time, but not the fluting like the Maximilian stuff. Maybe it was made in Greenwich?

Thanks for the pictures! A guy I know, who makes armour, incedentally, said that if you stick the lens of the camera right up to the glass, it's too close to pick up reflections.

background on time and location of pieces would be nice. For future, if you aren't worried about memory space, just photo the item label and when you are going through your photos you can see what each is. I learned this with vacations and film. Photo the sign at the entrance to the park etc. and when the film comes back from the developer you won't have forgotten where the shots were taken.

Cheers Dragonsreach  Its kind of you to share these impressive examples of plate armour, they have a kind of magical aura about them. I now have a clearer understanding of how to approach painting ES NMM, and I know just the mini to experiment on. I really look forward to your next article on Japanese armour... Thanks heaps!!
