Hello fellow CMoN members,

A lot of fuss has been made about the magic Ctrl+Shift+L command in Photoshop lately, but there are some images that simply need more work to really represent reality properly. Today I'm here to try and show off an often overlooked feature of Photoshop: Selective Color.

This nifty little tool allows you to select certain areas of the spectrum in your image, and quite simply allows you to change it to whatever hues you want.

Here's an example. Take my WIP Redemptionist for Inquisitor... nice fiery red robes accented by a gentle bone color.

Before

In reality, it's a nice clean color. But in the image (appropriately named "Before") it's way too yellow for my liking. Auto Levels won't take care of this little problem, as it's related to the auto white balance program in my camera not the light levels of the image.

So we turn to Selective Color tool [interface seen in "During" (Note: This is the interface from Photoshop 5.0, it may look and function slightly different in other versions.)] and enter the yellow area of the spectrum. Toss some of the yellow, boost some of the magentas, and skim just a little off the top of the cyans and viola! Perfect match to the real thing.

During

And, that taken care of, we have the "final" image. Nothing terribly different, but it more accurately depicts the real thing and that bit of honesty makes me feel a lot more satisfied with what people have to say about the image and - more importantly - no excuses need to be made on my part

After

This tool is also useful for doing slightly less subtle retouching. You can use it to test hypothetical color schemes as well. Just grab one of your minis with the same hilighting style you plan on using, select the area of the spectrum you want to swap out, and go nuts!

very nice article! I'm curious, if it's not giving up a secret, did you prime in white or black and what reds did you use?

In Corel Photo Paint it's easy to do too... No keyboard short cut, but you go from the Image menu to Adjust and click Select Color. So now we have no brand bias.

If I worked for Adobe I wouldn't be using Photoshop 5.0 would I Thanks for the comments though. Glad to hear people find it useful. And yrett, I found the background change an improvement too

I think an interesting point is the change in the background contrast versus the mini. Taking the yellow out of the beigey background really helps to "pop" the mini.

Well... those tools sure are handy, although they're nothing like the real thing (a dial-in subtractive color enlarger). However, I think the "After" image might now be a little too much on the magenta side. Perhaps an adjustment there as well would help it further... I really didn't have any problems with the original image, but as I don't have a miniature to compare it with, I cannot comment on it as well.
