Hi everyone.
This job was commissioned to me at the beginning of the January (IIRC). - Ferrus Manus, the Primarch of the Iron Hands.
First was a discussion about the general image of the Primarch; I started to seek information, hoping that there is a picture (or sketch) of him available.
It showed that there is no such a thing; there is only vague description of him (as a mighty warrior with arms covered in living metal, rumoured the arms became so when he was drowning some giant serpent in lava with his bare hands).
After figuring this, I made a few sketches to get the ideas running. I agreed with the client on the look from the sketch at the bottom of the above pic (notice it's the 3rd sketch).
I set on to doing the model - at first I thought it will be quite simple conversion using Space Marine parts, so I set the price for sculpting at quite a low level.
I planned to use Space Marine parts, but I stumbled upon Necron Warriors legs in my bits box - I liked them so much that the only Space Marine parts used is the upper half of the torso.
I started sculpting the model, bulking up the parts successively. After a week I was at the stage as seen on the third-from-bottom pic (with no arm)
You can see the model has more natural proportions than Space Marines - he's slightly taller than a Marine, measuring 37mm from feet to the top of his head.
I then began making the scales for the scalemail tabard. I also experimented with fine detail, covering his ankles with celtic-like design.
For shoulder and hip guards I used plasticard as a base - I usually use thicker foam-plastic (1mm) for this rather than the 0,5mm plasticard as may be seen here - the plasticard does not stay in the bent position and was much harder to get to look as I wanted it. I should have used the 1mm foam-plastic sheet - it would be thicker but the curve would be ideal and the edge could be filed to desired thickness. You learn your entire life...
I carried the celtic-like detail over onto the shoulder and hip guards, I sculpted the cloak and added cables. The client insisted that the arms look like covered in living metal rather than bionic, so the cables had to be subtle. I added a bit of detail to the plasma pistol.
Painting:
Honestly, it was a pain to paint - the limited palette we agreed upon, the oh-so-tiny-detail on the armour (I couldn't paint it like detail, I had to use gentle drybrushing and washing in successive stages - the lines are too small for me to be hit with the brush precisely one at a time!), the metallics (I couldn't remember when I last used metallics on such an important model), all the tiny things got summed up and gave me a headache.
Unfortunately, the client vanished just before I finished painting Ferrus. I waited a month and a half, asking people on Portent if anyone know him and sending him PMs and e-mails. Recently it seems that his e-mail account was deactivated (no such address existing).
I will have to put this model on eBay to get some gratification for the month I spent on it.

punkrockpatrick 18-Sep-07 #235885 | | Rating: 9 Wow... I've always wanted to see a model of Ferrus Manus, and here it is. Couldn't have been done much better in my opinion. It gets a 9 simply because the painting could use just a bit of improvement. Totally impressive. |

templartau 27-Aug-05 #145943 | | Rating: 9 Wow... just wow. This is one of those inspiring pieces which makes me want to start my own ambitious project. The only reason I didnt give it a 10 is because I think the black parts could have been done better. |
